Curb Appeal in the High Desert: A Weekend Checklist

High Desert, CA curb appeal checklist: house numbers at least 4 inches tall, a swept walk, a tidy desert-friendly yard and touch-ups where sun and wind hit.

First impressions start outside. In the High Desert, start with readable house numbers, a swept walk and a tidy yard built for dry weather. Then touch up paint and doors worn by sun and wind. Most of it fits in one weekend.

Why does curb appeal matter when you sell?

Buyers see your home from the street before they ever step inside. Many also drive by after seeing the listing online. A clean, cared-for front sets the tone for the whole showing.

It doesn't take a big budget. Small, visible fixes do most of the work.

What are the rules for house numbers?

Clear numbers help buyers, delivery drivers and emergency crews find you. They are also a code item.

The San Bernardino County Fire Protection District's Standard B-1 (revised July 1, 2023) sets these rules for one- and two-family homes:

  • Numbers at least 4 inches tall with a 1/2-inch stroke.
  • A color that stands out against the wall behind the numbers.
  • Readable from the road or fire access lane in front of the property.
  • Lit after dark by a built-in low-voltage light.
  • If the home sits more than 100 feet back, add numbers at the property entrance on a monument or sign.

San Bernardino County's residential addressing conditions use the same 4-inch size but a 50-foot setback trigger. Rules can vary by city and fire agency, so confirm with yours before you buy new numbers.

How do sun and wind affect the outside of a High Desert home?

Strong sun fades paint and dries out wood. Wind carries grit that dulls doors, trim and windows. Check these spots first:

  • Front door: Look for faded or peeling finish, especially on doors facing south or west.
  • Trim and fascia: Touch up chipped or chalky paint.
  • Garage door: Wash it, then repaint or replace dented panels.
  • Weatherstripping: Replace cracked strips around doors.
  • Light fixtures: Clean out dust and dead bugs. Replace dim bulbs.
  • Windows and screens: Wash off dust and replace torn screens.

What makes a desert-friendly front yard look tidy?

You don't need a lawn to make a good first impression. You need clean edges, healthy plants and a clear path to the door.

  • Pull weeds from gravel and cracks.
  • Refresh mulch or rock. Mojave Water Agency suggests a 2–3 inch layer around plants to hold moisture.
  • Trim shrubs away from windows, walkways and house numbers.
  • Remove dead plants and replace them with low-water ones.
  • Fix drip leaks and broken sprinkler heads.

For plant ideas, Mojave Water Agency's Desert Smart Plants list includes Texas ranger, desert marigold, penstemons, deer grass, banana yucca and desert willow. The list notes that higher parts of the High Desert can drop to 10°F or below, so check each plant's cold-hardiness rating.

Follow your water provider's watering rules while you tidy up. In Victorville, for example, sprinkler days are set by address, and drip systems are exempt from the schedule.
