From Hesperia or Victorville, you can reach Joshua Tree National Park through Lucerne Valley and Yucca Valley, or head out I-15 and I-40 to Mojave National Preserve, Afton Canyon, Rainbow Basin and Route 66 toward Amboy. As of November 2026, Joshua Tree charges $30 per vehicle with no timed entry, while the Mojave Preserve and the BLM natural areas are free to enter. Fall through spring is the season for these trips; summer heat makes most of them risky after mid-morning.

How do you get to Joshua Tree National Park from the High Desert?
Take SR-18 east to Lucerne Valley, then SR-247 south to Yucca Valley. From there, SR-62 (Twentynine Palms Highway) leads to both main entrances. The NPS directions page places the West Entrance five miles south of Highway 62 on Park Boulevard in Joshua Tree village. The North Entrance is three miles south of Highway 62 on Utah Trail in Twentynine Palms.
The park warns, "Do not rely on GPS directions." Phone apps can send you down rough dirt or soft-sand roads, so follow the signed highways instead.
Joshua Tree fees and reservations
As of November 2026, the Joshua Tree fee page lists these 7-day passes:
- Private vehicle: $30
- Motorcycle: $25
- On foot or bike: $15 per person
- Joshua Tree annual pass: $55, good for 12 months
We found no park-specific timed-entry or vehicle reservation system on that page. Ranger-led Keys Ranch tours are the exception: you must book ahead, and they cost $10 to $20 a person. In 2026, Veterans Day (November 11) is a fee-free day for US citizens and residents.
Practical tips for Joshua Tree
You can enter any time of day or night, but the park's basic information page says you will not find water deep inside the park, or gas, food or lodging. Buy what you need in Yucca Valley or Twentynine Palms. The park safety guidelines list a handful of drinking-water stops, including the West Entrance station, the Twentynine Palms visitor center and a few campgrounds. Check the park's current conditions page and closures map before you go.
What is there to see near Yucca Valley and Morongo Valley?
Pioneertown sits northwest of Yucca Valley. San Bernardino County describes it as a 1946 film set built to look like an 1880s Western town. Mane Street joined the National Register of Historic Places in 2020. The Western facades now house shops, restaurants and lodging, and people live in the town, so treat it as a neighborhood, not a theme park.
Big Morongo Canyon Preserve in Morongo Valley is a BLM-managed wildlife corridor where water flows all year, drawing migrating birds. BLM counts more than 247 bird species seen there, and the site is day use only. Its nonprofit partner, the Friends of Big Morongo Canyon Preserve, says it opens every day at 7:30 a.m. and closes at sunset, and entry costs nothing. The boardwalk trail is easy going for wheelchairs and strollers. Leave your dog at home; no dogs are allowed, even on a leash.
Which BLM areas near Barstow are worth a day trip?
Rainbow Basin Natural Area
Rainbow Basin is about 8 miles north of Barstow, reached by Fossil Bed Road. It has striped canyon walls and fossil beds. Entry is free.
- The Fossil Canyon Loop Road is one-way, narrow dirt. BLM recommends high clearance or 4WD and no RVs or trailers.
- Owl Canyon Campground has 22 first-come sites at $6 per night, with no water.
- Collecting fossils requires a permit. If you find one, leave it and call the BLM Barstow Field Office at (760) 252-6000.
Afton Canyon
Afton Canyon sits inside Mojave Trails National Monument. It is one of only a few spots in the desert where you can see the Mojave River on the surface in every season. From Barstow, drive about 35 miles east on I-15, exit at Afton, and follow a graded dirt road three miles south.
The campground has 22 primitive sites at $6 a night, with a 14-day limit. Water is not reliable, so bring your own. You need a campfire permit, and fires may be restricted in fire season.
Is Route 66 open between Barstow and Amboy?
Partly. San Bernardino County Public Works says sections of National Trails Highway have been reopening as repairs wrap up. As of November 2026, it lists the stretch from Cadiz Road to Mountain Springs Road, east of Amboy, as still closed. Some sections only allow vehicles under 3 tons.
The usual approach to Amboy from the High Desert is I-40 east from Barstow to Ludlow, then National Trails Highway. Confirm that the Ludlow-to-Amboy stretch is open before you go. The county's Route 66 page counts 128 timber bridges, more than 80 years old, between Barstow and Mountain Springs Road.
Expect more work ahead. In February 2026, the county filed notice of emergency repairs to bridges and roadway along the Ludlow-to-Amboy area after heavy rain washed debris onto the road. A separate county and Caltrans project plans to replace 19 timber bridges between Ludlow and Essex, with temporary detour roads at each site. Check the county page and Caltrans QuickMap the day you drive.
Amboy Crater
Amboy Crater is a volcanic cone about 250 feet tall and 1,500 feet wide. BLM's Needles Field Office runs the site. You will find paved parking, a vault toilet, shaded picnic tables and a trail up to the rim, but no water. Afternoons heat up fast, so BLM suggests hiking early with at least a liter of water per person, plus electrolytes. Download maps ahead, since signal is weak.
What should you know about Mojave National Preserve?
Mojave National Preserve has no entrance fee. From I-15, exit Kelbaker Road in Baker and drive 34 miles south to Kelso Depot, per the NPS directions page. The park warns not to enter "Mojave, California" in your GPS, which sends you far off course; use Kelso instead.
As of November 2026, the preserve conditions page reports:
- Kelso Depot's indoor visitor center is closed. The parking lot, outdoor areas, water filling and limited restrooms are open.
- Kelbaker Road is open, with potholes and shoulder washouts. Expect up to one-hour delays at the Kelso rail crossing.
- Kelso-Cima Road is open. Watch for desert tortoises.
- Hart Mine Road is closed due to damage.
Kelso Dunes
The Kelso Dunes hike covers about 3 miles out and back, climbing roughly 600 feet through loose sand. Give yourself 2 to 3 hours. The dunes can make a low humming sound, something NPS says only seven dune fields in North America do. Bring your own water, expect no shade, and save this hike for the cooler months.
How do you stay safe on a desert day trip?
- Water: Pack a gallon or more for each person for each day, as Joshua Tree's safety guidelines advise.
- Heat: July and August are the hottest months. Do your hiking early, before 10 a.m., or late, after 4 p.m.
- Cell service: Expect little or no signal in much of Joshua Tree. Save offline maps in the NPS App before you lose coverage, tell someone at home your route, and think about carrying a satellite messenger.
- Flash floods: Storms can flood washes even on sunny days. The National Weather Service says about 12 inches of moving water can sweep away most cars. Never drive around a closed or flooded road.
- Fuel: Fill up before you go. Joshua Tree has no gas stations inside the park.
